Analysis

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Old School has 217 pages. This seems like a lot, but it is easy and fun to read.

It is a fictional book.  It is the 10th book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series.  It is written by Jeff Kinney and was published in 2015  by Amulet Books.  The book is about the adventures of a boy named Greg Heffley, his family and his best friend Rowly.

The purpose of this book was to make kids laugh.  Greg is always doing silly things and getting into trouble.

It is written like a diary.  There are not chapters just entries divided up by days.  It is written in first person.  That means that Greg is telling the story.  Greg is the main character.  There are a lot of illustrations.  There are 1-2 pictures on each page.  This is an example of one of the illustrations.

The illustrations are usually funny and show what Greg is talking about in his diary.  The pictures are drawn to make it seem like Greg drew them. The font is interesting too.  It makes it look like Greg actually wrote it.

Scholastic.com says that kids in grades 3-8 might be interested in this book and the grade level equivalent is 5.2.

Highlights of the book

I really liked this book.  It was probably my favorite of all of the Diary of A Wimpy Kid books.

These were some of the best parts of the book:

  • Greg's family got a pet pig.  His mom taught it how to walk by giving it cookies.  The pig was smart and threw his GPS tracker in the garbage so he could go out of the house and stay out as late as he wanted.  I thought this part was funny.  I would not want a pet pig.

  • Greg joined the Homework Buddies Program and Frew was his buddy.  He was a third grader but instead of Greg helping him Frew helped Greg.  He would do all of his papers and sign his name on it.  Then Greg would cross out his name and put his name on the paper. His grades got a lot better when Frew did his work.

  • Greg's Dad put his Dad (Greg's grandpa) in time out because he had a party at their house without asking.

  • Greg's grandpa started going the wrong way on the freeway and then they ran out of gas.  Grandpa went to get gas and Greg hid in the car.  Some teenagers ate lunch on top of the car and Greg accidentally drove the car into a ditch.

  • Greg and his mom went to the park to clean up and Greg ran away with Billy and Frew followed them.  They got chased by Girl Scouts.  Billy stole some Girl Scout Cookies from them.

This is the tenth book of the Diary of  A Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney.

Greg Hefley is the main character.  He is in middle school.  He has an older brother named Roderick and a younger brother named Manny.  His best friend is Rowley.

The book starts out with Greg's mom talking about "the good old days."  She said that people did not use electronics as much back then.  They talked more with their neighbors.  His mom went around their town trying to get people to not use their electronics as much.

The first week of school Greg decided to sign up for the Homework Buddies club because did not want to go to music class.  His buddy was a boy named Frew.  Frew was a very smart boy.  Frew did all of his homework plus Greg's homework while Greg relaxed.

The school asked Greg's parents to come in for a conference because his grades were so good.  His grades were good because Frew was doing all his homework.

Greg's mom got some people from the town to not use electronics for the weekend.  They went to the park to clean it up to help pass the time.  Greg got in trouble when he ran away with Frew and a teenager named Billy.  His mom was mad because she had to use her phone to find him.

Greg signed up to go on a school fieldtrip to Hardscrabble Farms because he got in trouble.  He really didn't want to go because he heard scary things about a person called Silas Scratch and the bathrooms were gross.  His best friend Rowley got poison ivy and had to go home.  Then his Dad came to be the new chaperone.

Greg snuck into the woods and found his dad in a shack with a really nice bathroom.  He told Greg he made up the story about Silas Scratch when he was little so no one would find out about the nice bathroom. Greg kept his secret and when he left the camp he made a sign that said "Beware Silas Scratch" for other campers to see.
